Self-Organized Mesotechnology

Abstract

In this research, we will artificially create meso-sized machines (with a size between nanometers and micrometers*) by using a bottom-up technology called "curved self-assembly," which has been developed in our laboratory.

This unique technology enables the development of various meso-sized components, such as rings, spirals, and chains, that were not easy to create.

Light-responsive molecules are incorporated into these components, and their structures are manipulated by light.

These parts are ultimately combined to create a more complex device, thereby developing a meso-machine.

Meso-machines can directly capture and transport cells and proteins, making them a novel and valuable technology for the bioresearch and medical fields.

Our research will lead the world in developing meso-technologies that can realize the ultimate self-assembly technology.

*A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter. A micrometer (µm) is one-millionth of a meter. (e.g., the diameter of DNA is about 2 nm, the size of viruses is 20-300 nm, and the thickness of human hair is 80 µm.)
